Dedham Students Bring Disney’s “Frozen: The Broadway Musical” to High School Stage

The Dedham High School stage will be transformed this November, into the icy fjords around the fictional Scandinavian kingdom of Arendelle, as a cast of over 100 Dedham students come together to present Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical. For the first time in forever, the annual High School musical production will feature 10 middle school students and 27 elementary school students from the district alongside 41 Dedham High School performers.
“We knew from the beginning that we wanted to cast younger Dedham students as Young Anna and Young Elsa,” noted Dedham High Director Lindsay Soson. "With so many talented students, we decided to double cast the Young Annas and Young Elsas as well as the main Annas and Elsas. Over 80 students auditioned to play Young Anna and Young Elsa, and we're so proud of the four students who earned the roles!”
Soson also noted, "Given the incredible talent pool of younger students, it was a natural next step to look for a couple of other scenes where we could feature them in the show." The younger students will be performing in two featured songs during the show, with twenty-two 2nd through 5th graders as Bumblebee Dancers in "In Summer" and eleven 4th-8th graders joining high school performers as Hidden Folk in "Fixer Upper."
Dedham High School musical productions also feature a stage crew and musical orchestra pit crew with a combined total of 37 students, who are involved in every aspect of the production process from building sets, to sewing costumes, designing hair and makeup, and creating special effects. Several students are involved in the show in multiple areas, like Class of 2027 senior Zoey Savov-Wong who will be playing saxophone in the pit orchestra, serving as the co-designer of Hair & Makeup, and appearing in the show as a dancer. In addition, she is the Scenic Art Designer for the 40' double-sided groundrow and the Charge Scenic Artist, an incredible feat!
The production of Frozen marks the first time Dedham High will bring a family musical to the stage since Cinderella in 2023. “Frozen offered both the technical challenges for our incredibly strong seniors in tech crew and artistic opportunities that were well-suited to our actors. Given the intense technical demands of Frozen, we decided to audition and cast the show in June so that we could jump right in when school started,” said Soson. “We're so excited to share this magical music and story with the entire Dedham community!”
Full of glittering effects, humor, and a stunning musical score, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood, acceptance, and finding the real meaning of true love. Children are encouraged to come in costume! Come early to enjoy photo ops, Frozen trivia, themed treats, light-up snowflake wands, and more.
Frozen has a runtime of approximately 2.5 hours including a 15 minute intermission, and will run for four performances: Friday, November 13 at 6:30pm; Saturday November 14 at 1:00pm & 6:30pm; and Sunday, November 15 at 1:00pm.
Tickets are on sale now! Tickets purchased online in advance will include a $3 discount per ticket.
