Superintendent's Monthly District Update

November 2026

From The Desk of Superintendent Murphy

How is it already November? While the months seem to be flying by, so much meaningful work is happening across our district. I continue to be grateful for the dedication of our educators and staff and for the strong partnerships we share with families.

Each fall, I begin school residencies in each of our seven schools, setting aside dedicated time to visit classrooms, engage with students, and connect with educators and staff. These visits offer an opportunity to see our curriculum in action, experience the enthusiasm and curiosity of our students, and gain an even deeper appreciation for the care, creativity, and commitment our staff bring to their work each day. They also bring Dedham's Portrait of a Learner to life, as I see students developing and demonstrating the skills and dispositions that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

As a former teacher and a parent, I always looked forward to November parent-teacher conferences as an opportunity to gain deeper insight into my students' learning and progress. In the coming weeks, conferences will be offered for students in grades 1–12, and I encourage families to take advantage of these opportunities to connect with their child's teachers.

For families in grades K–9, conferences are a great time to ask questions and discuss the NWEA MAP Growth reports shared in October. Elementary families can also use this time to review and better understand their child's DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment results. While these assessments provide valuable information, they are just one part of understanding student learning. Conversations with teachers offer the opportunity for a more complete picture of each child's progress, strengths, and opportunities for continued growth.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope this season offers everyone an opportunity to pause, reflect, and appreciate the many things for which we are grateful.

A Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy Star Award certificate presented to Dedham Public Schools on October 26, 2026.

DHS Honored with Star Award for Seal of Biliteracy Program

Dedham High School was honored with a Seal of Biliteracy Star Award by the MA Department for Elementary and Secondary Education during a  Multilingual Leaders Network event held on October 26th.

The Star Award recognizes the work Dedham High School has done to expand opportunities for students in multilingual education and enabling at least 10% of DHS graduates to earn the Seal during the 2024-25 school year.   From the Class of 2025,   twenty-three Dedham High graduates earned the Seal of Biliteracy on their diplomas, six of those a Seal with Distinction.

New Registration Process In Development for LEAP

Dedham Public Schools will be transitioning to CommunityPass for Summer Programs and LEAP Before and After School registration and payments. This new platform is intended to improve the registration and account experience for families while better supporting the district's program needs.

This transition will begin with Summer Institute registration in mid-February, followed by the implementation of LEAP Before and After School in the next school year.

DPS Professional Development - Small Moves. Big Impact

On November 3, Dedham educators came together for our second annual Teaching & Learning Summit, a full day dedicated to professional growth, collaboration, and instructional improvement.

Throughout the morning, educators participated in voice and choice sessions tailored to their professional learning needs and interests. In the afternoon, department teams gathered to reflect on their learning and explore ways to apply new strategies in their classrooms.

The day reflected our district's Learn, Reflect, Apply professional learning model and supported Strategic Initiative 1.3, our commitment to providing high-quality professional development for all educators.

A special thank you to the Avery, Greenlodge, and Riverdale PTOs for generously providing coffee and snacks to help make the day a success!

Update from Dedham School Committee on Ongoing Contract Negotiations

The Dedham School Committee has been working with the Dedham Education Association (DEA) to come to an agreement on contracts for our Educational Support Professionals.  The negotiations, which began on March 5th, have most recently culminated in a collaborative effort to finalize language around establishing a mentoring program, as well as a significant shift in how ESP’s are currently paid - looking to move towards an annualized pay structure rather than a traditional hourly pay structure.  While wage proposals are also part of the ongoing negotiations, the final language around program parameters and payments will be a necessary first step towards final offer discussions.

The Dedham School Committee remains committed and hopeful about reaching an agreement soon with our ESP unit.  It is a priority of the committee to ensure that these professionals feel that their concerns and needs are being heard, but also that any language and offers agreed upon are done right and in a way that is sustainable and successful.

The next meeting of the Negotiations Subcommittee will be held on November 17th at 4:15PM in the Dedham High School Library.  Anyone is welcome to attend as a silent observer to this meeting.   Negotiations meetings are not recorded or broadcast by Dedham TV due to collective bargaining policies.

Dedham Public Schools Featured in National Attendance Solutions Network

Dedham Public Schools was the featured district panel at the inaugural quarterly meeting of the Attendance Solutions Network, an initiative of the Partnership for Student Success at Johns Hopkins University. The national forum brings educators and district leaders together to share effective strategies for reducing chronic absenteeism and strengthening student engagement.

Dedham was invited to showcase its three-year implementation of City Connects, a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to student support developed at Boston College. Representing Dedham were Ali Lukoff, School Psychologist and City Connects Program Manager; Ed Paris, Director of Curriculum and Professional Practice; and Elaine Goldberg-Sheehy, Riverdale School Social Worker and City Connects Coordinator.

On Stage! Frozen - The Musical

The Dedham High School stage will be transformed next week, into the icy fjords around the fictional Scandinavian kingdom of Arendelle, as a cast of over 100 Dedham students come together to present Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical.

For the first time in forever,  the annual High School musical production will feature 10 middle school students and 27 elementary school students from the district alongside the 41 high school performers.   The show is also supported by 37 crew and orchestra members.   Read more about the show here!

Full of glittering effects, humor, and a stunning musical score, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood, acceptance, and finding the real meaning of true love.  Children encouraged to come in costume! Come early to enjoy photo ops, Frozen trivia, themed treats, and more.

Frozen will run for four performances:  Friday, November 13 at 6:30pm; Saturday November 14 at 1:00pm & 6:30pm; and Sunday, November 15 at 1:00pm.

Tickets are on sale now!   Tickets purchased online in advance will include a $3 discount.

DHS Seniors to Attend Annual Credit For Life Fair

A Credit for Life Fair is coming to DHS, funded by the Office of the State Treasurer and Office of Economic Empowerment!

Credit for Life Fairs are financial literacy events for high school students—primarily in Massachusetts—where 12th grade students practice making real-world budgeting decisions based on a mock salary.

Students navigate booths to "purchase" housing, transportation, and necessities, learning to manage student loans, credit and savings while developing lifelong, responsible money management habits. DHS will be hosting Wegmans, Donahue Realty, Dedham Police Department, the MA Educational Financing Authority, among other vendors!
