Superintendent Email Update: June 17
DPS Coronavirus Update
Wednesday, June 17, 2020
I am sending along just a brief update tonight as we all wait anticipating the release of DESE’s preliminary fall school reopening guidance either tomorrow or Friday. I will send along the formal documentation as soon as I receive it. Remember, this is only preliminary guidance, but it will frame the broad parameters and provide a planning template prior to the final guidance to be released in late July. Be on the lookout for a remote learning feedback survey one week from today where you can relay your experiences and provide input to our plans for the hopeful reopening of Dedham Public Schools in the fall.
I am aware that many of us have experienced glitches and other interruptions with some larger scale Google meets video conferences this week. At tonight’s School Committee meeting we had over 75 people simultaneously trying to honor our district faculty/staff retirees and recognize student New England Math League (NEML) winners. I apologize for these challenges, and we are working to provide additional guidance and support as Google continues to provide upgrades and improvements to address these issues. Thank you for your patience.
Avery Elementary School faculty members Wendy Garland (Library) and Sara Santos (Music) would like to extend an invitation to Avery's digital musical Cinderella...If the Shoe Fits. This production began on the stage in January with over 70 students participating and has now turned into a digital version with over 50 students participating. This musical has become so much more than a cute little elementary school play. You can view this digital production on Thursday, June 18th @ 7:00pm. Just go to: https://bit.ly/
If you haven’t visited already, make sure you check out the DPS Virtual Art Show of student work. SO MANY of our students from Grades K-12 have their work featured in these presentations, and you will be very impressed by their efforts.
Remember to check out the district’s summer learning website under the oversight of our Office of Curriculum and Instruction. In addition, make sure you visit the DPS Black Lives Matter Bookshelf. There are excellent student resources here organized by grade level.
As mentioned last week, just another reminder that as we begin to prepare for the transition to summer, our “Grab and Go” meals program will continue after the last day of school (Friday, 6-19). Beginning next week, distribution days will be adjusted to Tuesdays and Thursdays only each week. In addition, distribution over the summer will be limited to just the Avery Elementary School and Riverdale Elementary School sites. The Veteran’s Road site will no longer be available for summer meal pickup. Families can visit either remaining site over the summer. This 2-day-per-week service will be easier for our food service workers and distribution volunteers, and hopefully more convenient for patrons also.
All my best,
