DPS Coronavirus Update - DESE Reopening Guidance
June 25, 2020
As some of you may already be aware, today the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released its Initial Fall School Reopening Guidance. This work is based upon the current available research available at this time, and this guidance will be updated in late July. I am very grateful for the time and effort that went into this document. It is very comprehensive and includes a goal of safely returning as many students as possible for in-school learning in the fall. I spent this morning discussing this document’s contents on a conference call with the DESE Commissioner and Superintendents from across the state.
This guidance will take time to review and unpack for our District Leadership Team. I ask for your patience and flexibility as we determine how we will prepare for all three required models (completely in school, hybrid in school/remote, and completely remote learning). This document does not answer all questions related to school in the fall and please remember this is only the INITIAL guidance.
We will be convening a DPS Reopening Task Force during the week of July 6. If you have not already expressed interest in participating, please email your building principal and me. This group will require quite a bit of time and availability as input from many stakeholders is considered. Principals and PTO Leaders will be selecting one parent and one teacher representative from each school to participate on this district team. Selected members will be notified by Thursday, July 2.
I hope all of you take the time to read through this entire DESE Initial Fall Reopening Guidance document. Thank you in advance for your flexibility, patience, and understanding as we work through the ambiguities that will certainly be uncovered. I will keep everyone posted as information develops.
All my best,
