DPS Update

Tuesday, July 21, 2020

Hi Folks,

Last night over 50 members of the Dedham Public Schools Reopening Task Force met virtually to continue planning for school in the fall.  I want to thank the members of this group for their substantial commitment of time and attention to this daunting task.  The group was provided with results from over 2200 responses from parents and staff to the district’s reopening survey sent out last week.  The Task Force Subcommittees have been meeting every day to consider all input and plan how we would provide remote only, fully in-person, and hybrid combinations of these two models.  All narrative survey comments from parents and staff will also be provided to the Task Force.  Last Wednesday all districts received instructions that an initial overview of these plans are due to the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on July 31, and a comprehensive plan with a preferred option is due on August 10.  A final decision for the fall will be made at that time.

Parent/Caregiver Support Groups.

DPS Director of Counseling Services Ashley Dube and Dedham Youth Commission Counselor Angela Osei-Mensah will be offering two parent/caregiver support groups this summer (July 30th and August 24th). These groups will be an open format where parents/caregivers can seek support from mental health professionals, and each other, with navigating the current social and health crises. It is an opportunity for parent connection, support, and conversation. These groups are open to any parent/guardian in Dedham with a child entering PreK-12.  An informational flyer about these DPS Family Support groups is provided here.  Please feel free to join.

All my best,

Mike Welch
