DEDHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS WELCOME NEW SUPERINTENDENT NAN MURPHY

The Dedham Public Schools welcomed Superintendent Nan Murphy to her first day as head of the school district on July 3, 2023. Superintendent Murphy was named as Dedham’s newest Superintendent of Schools in January, and comes to Dedham from Marblehead Public Schools, where she had been the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.   In the summer months leading up to the new school year, Murphy’s efforts will be focused on building relationships within the school community.  

“While I’ve had the opportunity to already have spent some time visiting every school, spending time in classrooms and greeting educators and students, I look forward to getting started and further creating opportunities to connect with our families and community,” notes Superintendent Murphy, in preparing her first outreach to families and staff.  “I want to hear what the experiences have been, what DPS has done, what we are doing, and where you hope the work in schools goes in the future.”

Murphy also expressed thanks to Dr. Ian Kelly for his steady leadership, having served as Interim Superintendent for the last five months.  Dr. Kelly will continue in Dedham,  leading the Office of Curriculum and Instruction.   

Superintendent Murphy will be hosting community and family Meet & Greets over the summer, both in-person and online.  Parents and Community Members are invited to meet Superintendent Nan Murphy at the Dedham Middle School Library on July 18th at 1:00pm - 2:30pm and August 1st at 10:00am -11:30am, or online via Zoom on August 9th at 7:00pm - 8:00pm.

Nan Murphy brings a wealth of educational experience to the Dedham School District, including six years as a school principal in Lowell, MA, where she led the transformation of an underperforming, high-needs elementary school and was recognized by DESE Commissioner Chester for the school’s quality improvements. She has supported statewide school improvement efforts at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as in her time as an administrator in Lowell Public Schools.  Murphy was selected in a unanimous vote by school committee members, who emphasized her commitment to collaborative leadership, student-centric approach, and experience building culturally inclusive school communities as critical skills that would greatly benefit Dedham students and faculty.
