Spotlight on History: DMS Grade 7 Hosts Exhibit at Town Hall

Dedham Middle School Grade 7 Students Host Town Hall Exhibit on Asian Culture Following New Social Studies Curriculum Pilot Program

On April 27th, seventh grade students from DMS invited the public to the opening night of their Asiant Influence & Culture Experience exhibit at Dedham Town Hall. This exhibit, which is a culminating exhibition of student learning from the Investigating History pilot on Central, South, and East Asia  will be showcased for 3 weeks at Dedham Town Hall, from April 27 - May 19th.

The 7th grade at Dedham Middle School has been piloting a new social studies curriculum this year,  Investigating History : Grade 7 History/Social Sciences Frameworks on Central and South Asia, and East Asia. This is an innovative new history curriculum being developed by DESE in collaboration with Primary Source, a global education nonprofit based in Watertown.

The culmination of all the student's learning and hard work will be a completely student-curated museum experience about ancient Asian innovations, impacts and influences.  The students not only learned about the region and its history, but have studied and learned about modern day work and what it takes to be a museum curator, as well as skills in project management, marketing and more.

The event was well-attended by the community and students were recognized by the Dedham Select Board.  Attendees from DESE also noted the success of the exhibit in their weekly email:

"One more highlight from the week: The incredible crew of Dedham seventh grade
teachers worked with their students to set up a gallery of exhibits about Asian history and
culture at the Dedham town hall based on their work this year. They brought in a curator
from the local historical society to help students learn about how to set up an engaging
museum exhibit and the results are truly impressive. "I had the privilege of visiting on
opening night and hearing directly from students about their work, but the exhibits will be
open to the public for the next few weeks while the town hall is open. If you're in the area, I highly encourage you to stop by–and congratulations to the Dedham Middle School team
for their hard work to make this happen!" - Ruben Henriques, DESE
