I am sure many of you are wondering what is good about this evening? Today’s news from Governor Baker did not come as a shock; however, it was a kick in the stomach. I was genuinely hopeful when I shared the DHS Faculty video with the Class of 2020 last night. My hope may have been foolish, but that hope is what I have needed to hold onto as we navigate this new normal.
Today, we move onto reality. I am incredibly sad for the Class of 2020. Unfortunately, the reality is you will not walk across the stage to receive your diplomas on June 6th. For that, I am sorry beyond words. The reality is that we need to be patient as we plan the safest, most appropriate way to honor the Class of 2020. In the coming weeks, Superintendent Welch, School Committee Chair Coughlin, and I will be working on planning a graduation ceremony that will keep everyone safe; but will allow us to celebrate in the best manner possible.
A high school graduation is a community event. Thankfully, Dedham is an incredible community, a community that takes great pride in its students, especially their seniors! I know that we will have unwavering support as we move forward with planning. Seniors and relatives, be sad for your loss but also be patient as we plan a time to celebrate.
