Civics Spotlight: Town Government Day
On March 22, Dedham Town Hall welcomed a group of students from DHS as part of Town Government Day. This annual spring event, which was reinstated this year following a break due to the pandemic, has been a favorite part of the civics curriculum, introducing students to their local government processes, departments and operations.

Community Spotlight: DMS 7th Grade Community Pen Friends
The Dedham Middle School is launching a new community correspondence project - Pen Friends- for students in the 7th grade. Created in response to some of the social and emotional challenges our teachers have observed over the last two years, Pen Friends was designed to expand student literacy skills while also helping to foster greater connections between our DMS students and the Dedham community.

Global Spotlight: DHS Students Visit Costa Rica
Over February break, DHS teachers Alison Guifarro and Abby Zuckerman accompanied 26 sophomores, juniors and seniors to visit four regions of Costa Rica. The trip was a wonderful opportunity for DHS students to extend out of their comfort zone in Dedham, learn about self sustainability among other things, and ultimately become better global citizens of the world.

Diversity Talks PERM Assessment
The DEIJ Office in partnership with Diversity Talks administered the PERM assessment to educators at the start and end of the 2021-2022 academic year. The PERM is a framework of cultural competence based on four dimensions; Power, Empathy, Relationships, and Mindset. The PERM was designed to provide a roadmap of culturally responsive practices for educators and other adults working in youth-serving organizations. Highlights from the data: *Statistically significant increase in cultural competence * Reduction in cultural blindness reported *Reported behavior shifts as a result of attending the workshop.

NEW SUPERINTENDENT CHOSEN FOR DEDHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Dedham School Committee voted on Wednesday evening to name Nan Murphy as Dedham’s next Superintendent of Schools. Ms. Murphy comes to Dedham from Marblehead Public Schools, where she is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. Ms. Murphy was selected in a unanimous vote by school committee members, who emphasized her commitment to collaborative leadership, student-centric approach, and experience building culturally inclusive school communities as critical skills that would greatly benefit Dedham students and faculty.

Dedham Uses Grant To Create New *Free * Teacher Pathways Program
Do you have a bachelor’s degree? Would you like an ESL initial teaching license for pre-K to Grade 6? The Dedham Public Schools has received a grant to create a Teacher Pathway Program, in partnership with Collaborative for Educational Services (CES). This new program is recruiting for its first class in May 2023. The CES is focused on justice, equity, and supporting learners of all ages. Our goal is to increase the number of global majority teachers. CES will provide six courses and practicum experience leading to an ESL initial teaching license for pre-K to Grade 6.

Dr. Ian Kelly named Interim DPS Superintendent
At the Wednesday, November 17th Dedham School Committee meeting, the Committee voted unanimously to approve a contract for Dr. Ian Kelly to become the Interim Superintendent from December 23, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
