This summer we will offer the same great programs as we have in past years. All of these programs are amazing opportunities for Dedham’s students to maintain and enrich the learning that they engaged in during the school year. While these programs have and will continue to provide great benefits to kids, their ability to run is largely a function of having great people like you to lead and teach.
There are great teaching opportunities and new leadership roles as well. We hope that you will take a look at the offerings below and consider plugging into a program.

TREK: Reading Teacher
The primary role of the reading teachers for the TREK program is to facilitate the required summer reading work, while fostering an appreciation for age-appropriate literary works. TREK reading teachers carefully select a novel that challenges our avid readers, yet are comprehensible for our more reluctant learners. We have little to no prior background knowledge of each student’s reading level and academic capabilities, so we are careful to choose novels that can be tailored to meet the needs of each student’s reading level. Reading teachers will engage the students in extension activities related to the novel, which may include writing prompts and discussions.

TREK : TREK-reation Teacher
The role of recreation teacher during the TREK program is to incorporate a physical fitness component to the program. The TREK recreation teacher must be able to communicate the rules and regulations of the activities, and demonstrate them clearly while managing the student assistants, and be comfortable leading large classes of (20-40) TREK students for extended periods of time. The job involves developing a number of different activities over the course of TREK to allow for all students to enjoy the activities.

TREK: STEM Teacher
The primary role of the STEM teacher for the TREK program is to facilitate the students’ development of excitement for the world of science. This TREK session focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum while fostering an appreciation for age-appropriate scientific awareness. Students will become directly involved in a variety of concepts, driven to enhance their present science knowledge and prepare them for their upcoming years at DMS. One of these positions will focus on Technology and Engineering and the other position will focus on Science and Mathematics.

TREK Math Teacher
The role of the math teachers for TREK is to provide students with the instructional support they need to successfully complete their summer math requirement. During the TREK sessions, the TREK math teachers teach groups, each containing approximately 20 students. Typically, there are one or two high school students (who were selected as TREK assistants) helping out during each class. Students enter TREK with a range of math knowledge and skills; therefore, the extent of instruction and support that TREK math teachers provide is based on the needs of each student. Students work independently on the summer math packet, completing the topics at their own pace, while TREK math teachers assist students on an individual basis by answering specific questions and providing instruction or review of concepts and skills.

TREK: Google/Technology Teacher
The primary role of the technology/Google teacher for the TREK program is to facilitate the students’ development of excitement for the world of technology and to assist students in becoming versed in the world of Google Workspace for Education. This TREK session focuses on technology used in the higher grades and the materials and information that will be available to students in middle school and high school. Students will become directly involved in a variety of tools and software driven to enhance their present technological knowledge and prepare them for their upcoming years at DMS. Teacher should include keyboarding review with students as a component, as well as possible video production or video creation.
