
About Avery Summer Institute

The 2023 Avery Summer Institute offers a variety of enrichment opportunities for elementary age children living in Dedham. The program offers week-long options in the morning or afternoon, such as Summer Gym Class, YouTube Music Video, Musical Theater, Book Cooks, Girls Want to Have Fun and many more.
Each workshop runs for one week. Workshops are offered on the weeks scheduled and offered for morning and/ or afternoon sessions.
Dates: One week morning and afternoon sessions July 5 through August 4, 2023
Time: Morning Session 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. / Afternoon Session 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Avery Elementary School
Fee: Week 1: $55, Weeks 2-5 $90
Transportation: No
Meals: Lunch provided for children who are enrolled in morning and afternoon sessions

A Day Crafting
Too much screen time? Children will boost their coordination skills and their creativity as they craft through the seasons. Children will take a break from screens while developing their cooperation and interpersonal skills.

If you love sports, this is the perfect camp for you! Campers will participate in a variety of sports each day to sharpen their skills and take part in creative games to learn how to become a valuable team player!

Animals Around The World
Come and explore animals from around the world!
Each day we will travel around a new continent searching for some of the animals that inhabit that land. Discover where they live on the continent and why they live there. Explore what they eat, how they play, who their friends are and who may be their enemies.
The children will enjoy stories and create arts and crafts based on the animals that are learned that day. The students will make a special project at the end of the week to make the animals and their habitats come to life!

Building & Engineering
In this class, we’ll be engineering and building with all different materials! There will be a variety of prompts to create and build structures or solve problems, as well as some free building opportunities. We will work both independently and in collaborative groups. Building materials may include legos, plusplus, picasso tiles, cardboard, paper, and more. Bring your creativity!

Comics Club
Calling all creative thinkers! Do you like reading comics or making your own? Comics Club is the place for you. Join us as we make our own comics. We will develop new characters and scenes for them to explore and maybe even take over. Come prepared to draw, write, and most importantly, be creative. No artistic skills are required, but the more creativity you bring, the more fun we will have!

Explore the Outdoors
Join us as we explore and learn about the great outdoors through crafts, educational videos, hands-on activities, read alouds, and scavenger hunts. We will be creating our own bird feeders and butterflies, sun catchers, kindness rocks, nature journals, clay animals, and much more! Spend a day making flower pots and planting your own seeds!
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes to play outside, go on nature walks, complete obstacle courses, and scavenger hunts!

French Language, Music and Culture
Paris, Je t’aime! This class will introduce you to French language, music and culture. We will learn numbers, colors and greetings in French, virtually explore some of the beauty of Paris, celebrate Bastille Day, and play games in French! This workshop is perfect if you want to learn about French language and culture and may even help you decide what language you want to take in Middle school.

Fun With Food
In this class, we’ll be doing all things fun related to food! We’ll do food science experiments and read funny food stories. We’ll make crafts and decorations using food materials, and make creative and tasty snacks. Students will not eat food used during class – all food to be eaten will be sent home with a list of ingredients.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Each day we will celebrate a new theme.
Wednesday: Luau - Sip a fruity umbrella drink, make a grass skirt and lei, play theme-related games and create an oozing volcano.
Thursday: Halloween in July - Join us for a day of dressing up, scavenger hunt, trick or treating, and traditional games with a twist
Friday: Diva´s Day Out: Step out for a day of self-care. We will paint our nails, make jewelry, decorate flip flops, sip healthy smoothies, as well as relax and unwind with a calming Yoga session.

Let's Bead!
A beading workshop where students will create a variety of beaded jewelry and accessories that can be personalized for girls or boys. Beading supplies will be provided but students are also welcome to bring their own beading supplies and projects. Students will learn basic beading design including color, pattern, and materials to create their own pieces or for gifting.

Make-a-Movie
We all love watching movies, but have you ever thought about making your own? With Ms. Altone you will learn about Stop-Motion Animation, Flip Books, Clay-animation, and so much more! Students will use a combination of technology, art materials, and everyday objects to create mini-movies (Short Films).
We will also watch a few Shorts from Pixar, Disney, and some old black & white films! At the end of the course, all of our films will be shared with families and friends. Who’s ready to win some Oscars?

Mermaid Tales
Come dive into the Legends and Myths of Mermaids! We will spend the week learning about mermaids through stories and pictures. We will also create themed crafts and drawings, engineer a mermaid cage to catch one, bake mermaid treats, and design our own mermaid jewelry.

Novel Engineering
Students will use stories and books as the basis for engineering design challenges that help them identify problems, design solutions, and engage in the Engineering Design Process while reinforcing their literacy skills. Students will also learn how to use a variety of STEM toys to imagine, create, and build prototypes like an engineer. We will use a variety of materials such recycled materials, K’Nexs, Legos, gears, zoobs, and more!

Science Discovery Camp
Examine the world through science discovery. Use scientific instruments to learn about plants and animals, weather, light and color, and more. Do you want to create rain? Play with electricity? Build circuits? Make rainbows? Explode volcanos? Use awesome science tools?
Explore and create Fractals? We will do it all! We will uncover the magic of science together. Students should expect indoor and outdoor explorations, science videos and books, hands-on experiments and discovery, arts and science crafts, games and lots of fun!

Seaside Explorers
Do you love arts and crafts? Spending time at the beach? Then you will love seaside explorers! Each week we will be creating beach and ocean themed crafts and learning about our oceans and the animals that live there.
We will learn more about our planets oceans through read alouds, educational videos, and hands on activities and experiments.
Join us in making ocean slime, beach themed snacks, seashell art, salt painting, jellyfish sun catchers, sand art, shark fin hats, and much more! Be ready for our goldfish relay race, sink or float experiments, sailboat races, and beach bingo!

Fitness, Fun, and Food
Self-care can help kids of all ages become more aware of their physical and emotional needs, and even small acts of self-care can decrease stress, improve relationships, and promote wellness of the body and mind. In this self care class for kids we will learn new ways to move our bodies both indoors and outdoors, practice mindfulness, and learn to make and get to enjoy different healthy and delicious snacks! From yoga to outdoor walks, meditation, stretching and cooking, this class will have us moving our bodies, enjoying the weather, and learning to make our own healthy snacks!

Shake It Off!
Summer is a perfect time to start dancing! This dance camp is for all levels of dance experience. Each day the dancers will participate in a morning stretch and will practice their jumps, turns, and leaps across the floor. By the end of the week, each dancer will have learned over a minute and a half of jazz, hip hop, or contemporary choreography.

Summer Musical
We’ll need morning and afternoon to prep this hilarious and challenging 40 minute musical “Summer camp” If you are a musical lover, this is the class for you! In addition to acting and singing, you can expect to build set pieces, organize costuming, and create our backdrop.
This class is a perfect preparation for participation in elementary and Middle School musicals. Join us for a week of fun and music!

YouTube Music Video
Join Mrs. Santos and Ms. Connors to make a brand new music video! We will begin our week by picking our favorite popular radio song and imagining a storyline for our video. Then we’ll learn to play the song using some of the many instruments in the music room like ukulele, boomwhackers, glockenspiels, drums, bells, recorders, keyboards… whichever instruments our group members like best!
We will record ourselves performing on each set of instruments and layer these recordings to create our own arrangement of our song. Once we add dance moves and costumes we’ll be ready to record our video! Arrange the song, record our sound, and finally make a music video to share with all!
