Introduction
The Boston Symphony Orchestra has renovated their facility at Tanglewood to include an Art Gallery/Reception area for their honored guests. You and your partner have been elected as the curators  to choose the artwork that will adorn the walls.

The Task
The Symphony has requested that you limit your selections to twelve paintings from three of the Art "ism's" , Impressionism, Surrealism and Realism. They would like each "ism" represented by two artists each of which will display two paintings. Your job is to research within each category the different artists and their work. An explanation of each "ism" and a short biography of each artist should accompany your selections.   You will present your final choices and research to the Symphony in a Powerpoint show.

The Process
1. Work independently (or if there are not enough computers get together with your assigned partner)

2. Print out the worksheet  (you may want to make a copy for each of you)

3. If you are working with a partner compose the definitions collectively. Each of you should choose one artist for each "ism" and that artists paintings for the gallery

Use your browsers back button to return to this page from all the links.
All Links are in Red

3. Start by looking at the article The "Ism's"of Art   Follow the directions for giving a password on the opening page and the article should appear. Make note on the worksheet of some of the other kinds of ""Ism's""

4. Impressionism   Take the Guided Tour. There are idea and picture tabs at the bottom of the page for additional supplementary information (This site will only work if Flash Player is installed on your computer)

Make any notes on the definition of Impressionism on the worksheet.

Web Museum and Artcyclopedia are two other resources for you to check out to polish up your definition and begin to identify impressionist artists and their work.

Compose a definition and write it on the worksheet.    Make note in the spaces provided  as to the different Impressionist artists that may be mentioned . You will research them later.

5. Surrealism   Read Alan Maks' article on Surrealism.  What do you think about this kind of thinking ? Make notes on worksheet

Artcyclopedia , Andre Bretons description and this Portland State University site are also good resources for the definition and to begin identifying artists and their work of the Surrealistic style.

Compose a definition and write it on the worksheet.    Make note in the spaces provided  as to the different Surrealistic artists that may be mentioned and any of their artwork that you like. You will research them later.

6. Realism  Check out the Artlex and Web Museum sites to begin your definition on Realism and start to identify artists and their work.

The Open Directory Project and this Realism Painters list are good places to find the names and works of artists

Compose a definition and write it on the worksheet.    Make note in the spaces provided  as to the different Realist artists that may be mentioned. You will research them later.

7. Decisions Decisions  Use the following web sites to choose the two artists from each "ism" that you will recommend to the Symphony for their gallery.  Check to see if their is biographical information at the site and make any necessary notes on the worksheet. Do the museums have any work by your chosen artists in their collection ?

Museum of Modern Art, New York

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Metropolitan Museum of Art    Scroll down on this page and use the sites search engine. Enter a style of painting or an artists name

8. Refining Bibliographical Information and Identifying works
The Art Institute of Chicago has an interactive game to find information on various artists and their works. Follow the directions on the page. It's kind of fun.

9. Choosing Painting Mark Hardens Artchive  This site is where you can find Images of artists work as well as some bibliographical information. Mark Hardens site allows the copying of images for Educational purposes. You must give him credit however. When you open the site be sure to scroll down the page and open and read the image use link.

10. Gather Images  Create a new folder on your computer. Label the folder Images. Use this folder to copy and paste copies of paintings  from  The Artchive (Mark Hardens site) that you would like to include in the Gallery.

Save them as JPEG format.

Remember to choose two paintings by each artist.

You may want to think about a painting or two for the opening page of your Powerpoint Presentation also.

11. Powerpoint Presentation
Start with an opening page. The page should contain the name of the gallery- Three "Ism"s' Art Gallery, your partners and your name as curators, and an interesting background or image(s)that complement your theme.

12. The following pages should include a table of contents, a description of each of the three "Ism's", A biographical piece on each  artist and copies of the two paintings chosen for each artist.
Retrieve the images from the folder you created in step 10

Conclusion
You and your partner will show your presentation to the class. Let's share what we have learned about artistic movements and styles. We will see how many of you picked the same artists. It will be interesting to see how different or the same the presentations are.
