Introduction:
Have you ever heard of the
Seven Ancient Wonders of the World?
more than 2,000 years ago, a Greek writer called Antipater of Sidon
compiled a list of what he considered to be the most spectacular buildings
of that time. Later, these seven incredible structures became known as
the Seven Wonders of the World. No one is really sure why Antipater came
up with the selection of these particular structures and the locations of
where they existed in the ancient world. You are a team of famous architects,
geologists, and historians contracted to build the “eighth” wonder of the
world. Before you can begin you will have to determine the best rocks or
minerals to use as building materials for this new wonder. You will
have to become familiar with the history and reasons for the construction
of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Once you have completed
your research then you can begin designing the eighth wonder of the world,
outline the purpose of the building and for whom it will be built for.

The Task:
You will be identifying where these structures were located, which ones
have lasted all these years. Find out what "rocks" or "minerals"
were used to build these magnificent buildings. Also, you will explore whom
these structures were created for and the purpose of their use. You may
ask yourself what distinguishes these places to be the wonders of the world
during that time? Is it their colossal size, their remarkable design,
the way in which they were built, or their timeless beauty? After considering
these ideas and researching the history of these places, you will be sharing
your ideas for the construction of the next wonder of the world.
Your team will use the Internet and other resources to collect
the following information:
1. What rocks and minerals will be the best choice
to use for the structure to survive thousands of years? Explain which
one of the three rock groups it is
from. Did you pick it for beauty, durability, or availability?
2. Research the Seven Wonders of the World.
a. What are the
names of the Seven Wonders of the World?
b. What is the
location of each of the structures?
c. Find out what
building materials were used to construct it.
d. Who was the
structure built for, what was the purpose of it, and what was it used for?
3. Illustrate a design for the new structure
or building. Color and diagram the rocks and
minerals used in the
picture.
4.. Write an explanation for why you chose the building
materials in your design.
Tell whom the building may
be built for, the purpose of this new structure, and when it existed.
