Introduction

G'Day mates!  You have been chosen to help your school choose a new mascot.  One classroom has been selected from each grade to research a specific animal. You have been assigned the kangaroo. It is your job to learn everything there is to know about kangaroos using many resources at school.  When your research is complete, you will present your kangaroo research at an all school assembly.  After each selected class presents their research every student in the school will have an opportunity to vote for his/her choice at the end of the assembly.

The Process
  1. Make a list including everything we know about kangaroos.  Write this information on a large piece of paper so everyone can see.
  2. Make a list of all the places available in our school where we can find information.  Go to these places and collect all the resources you can.  Don't forget to check in our animal basket.
  3. Look at the names of the kangaroos on the Kangaroo Graph.  Write your name on a paper kangaroo and place in the the row of the kangaroo you are interested in researching.
  4. Go and look up information in the books/magazines, on the posters and on the computer.

  2. Draw a picture of your kangaroo.
  3. Check your facts.
  4. Meet with teacher and then place all your information on a large piece of oak tag.
  5. Share projects with the classroom.  There will be an opportunity for classmates to offer feedback at the end of each presentation.  Each group will have one final chance to edit project.
  6. Present projects at all school assembly.
  7. Each child will vote for the favorite choice for the new school mascot in individual classrooms.
  8. The teachers will tally the votes and the principal will announce the choice for new school mascot over the intercom at the end of the day.
