Dedham High School Library Mission
|
| |
The Library staff promotes reading and information literacy at all ability levels. We aim to provide our students with the very best fiction and nonfiction available for young adults. We teach our students to access quality information, and respond to it critically, by exposing our students to a wide variety of information sources: books, quality Internet sites, print reference materials, magazines and newspapers, as well as print materials accessed through online databases.
In our Readers' Advisory capacity we work with teachers and students to encourage reading and writing. We do this by advocating for reading and by providing well-reviewed materials and "high interest" materials to our students. Our circulation has risen each of the last three years: successful students are readers. |

Friends and Supporters |
The DHS Library staff and the students and teachers at Dedham High School sincerely thank the Dedham Institution for Savings Foundation for a very generous grant that will fund the purchase of approximately 250 new library books in the 2010-2011 school year.
Special thanks also go to the Dedham Education Foundation, Dedham Junior Woman’s Club, and Mrs. Simmon’s Virtual Business Class for their annual support of our library.
Dedham High School students and teachers, as well as the Dedham Library staff sincerely thank these organizations, groups and individuals for providing us with additional funds to encourage reading and literacy in our community. Thanks to their generosity, book circulation at the Dedham High School Library has increased exponentially. |

Information for Students and Teachers |
Students
Students are welcome in the Library and may come without a pass before or after school, and also during lunch period.
When not with a class, students visiting the Library during the regular school day are required to have a pass from a teacher.
Access to the Library from a study hall requires a pass from a subject area teacher. Students should first report to study with the pass before coming to the Library.
When not with a class, students must sign in when they arrive and are expected to remain in the Library for the entire block, unless special arrangements have been made.
Students must respect others' right to work in a quiet environment.
All students using the computers in the Library must clear their use of computers with the Library staff and follow the District's Acceptable Use Policy.
The Dedham Public School System's Student Instructional Network Acceptable Use Policy is outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook. It can be found on the DHS website at www.dedham.k12.ma.us/dhs under the sidebar >"Our School" >"Student Handbook."
As with the rest of the school, there is no food or drink (except water) allowed in the main area of the Library. In the computer labs, no food or drink is permitted.
Most Library materials can be checked out for three weeks and renewed if they are needed longer. We do not charge fines for overdue materials. |

Teachers
The Library staff welcomes classroom use of the Library. When planning to bring a class to the Library, please let the Library staff know in advance.
There is a sign up book in the Library to schedule use of the Library's two computer labs and two remote wireless labs. Please be sure to book labs in advance and to indicate the number of students who will be using the lab.
The Library staff works with teachers on research assignments and suggests recommended Internet sites, as well as books and database resources. Assignments and recommended resources can be found on the Library page under the heading "Help With Specific Assignments." |
